NEET PG: Supreme Court Verdict On May 13; Wait To End

The much awaited verdict regarding the validity of MCI-conducted NEET PG and CBSE-conducted NEET UG will be delivered by the Honourable Supreme Court on Monday, May 13, 2013. More than a lakh MBBS graduates had been kept on tenterhooks for over seven months after the Supreme Court had prohibited the publication of the results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test held in November 2012 after some states, minority institutions and private medical colleges had moved the apex court against the MCI proposal to conduct a nationwide single entrance test to all postgraduate (MD/MS) courses in any medical college across the country. Several hearings were held during the last six months where MCI counsels and lawyers hired by the private colleges placed their arguments iin front of the three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of India- Altamash Kabir. Several pleas for interim order allowing release of results were moved till date, but the bench had refused to pass any interim relief.
However, as the last hearing of the NEET case had been finished on May 2 and the SC will be going on vacation next week, students had feared the worst-the verdict would be delivered when the SC reopens on July 2. However, fearing an imminent crisis of junior doctors in government medical colleges that will severely jeopardise the public healthcare system, the Supreme Court has added the NEET case tomorrow in the supplementary cause list of the vacation bench for interim order, much to the relief of medical graduates whose future had been in deep uncertainty as a result of the stalemate.
